These Fruit Prints are restored from the 48 richly colored plates of “The Fruits of America” (New York 1853) by C. M. Hovey, who desired to document the finest fruit cultivated on American soil. He was a master of apple illustrations, peach illustrations, fruit prints and vegetable in general. This set of fruit illustration is believed to be one of the most beautiful chromolithographs sets produced in during that period. Each piece of apple art, peach art and cherry art is ready to be framed and matted as beautiful art for the home.
Lemon Prints and Lemon Art by Jan Commelijn
Jan Commelin (23 April 1629 – 19 January 1692), also known as Jan Commelijn or Johannes Commelinus. He was an artist who illustrated fruit art, floral art and flower illustrations. He was also the son of Isaac Commelin a historian; his brother Casparus was a bookseller and newspaper publisher. Jan a botanist became a professor of botany when many plants were imported from the Cape and Ceylon and a new system had to be developed. As alderman of the city, together with burgomaster Johan Huydecoper van Maarsseveen he led the arrangement of the new botanic garden, Hortus Medicus later becoming Hortus Botanicus. He cultivated exotic plants on his farm ‘Zuyderhout’ near Haarlem. Commelin amassed a fortune by selling herbs and drugs to apothecaries and hospitals in Amsterdam and other Dutch cities. These prints are from is historic work on lemons and how to grow them.
